Diebold Nixdorf is a multinational end-to-end provider of services, software, hardware, and security for self-service transaction systems, like ATMs and point-of-sale terminals, for bankers and retailers.

They previously used a low-code provider that wasn’t able to meet Diebold Nixdorf’s functionality needs, including data storage limits that rendered their applications unusable. After testing multiple alternative low-code platforms, they partnered with Persistent Systems to migrate their suite of applications to OutSystems.

Discovering the flexibility of the OutSystems platform, Diebold Nixdorf built a simple internal application that would save the company hundreds of thousands of euros a year in operational costs. They did it in two weeks.

Challenge

Streamlining operational inefficiencies with low-code

Over 160 years ago, Diebold Nixdorf began by making safes. Naturally, security is embedded in their DNA. Now, they’re a provider of secure services, software, and hardware for banking and retail clients worldwide. When any hardware repairs or installations are scheduled for their self-service transaction systems, technicians are sent to the site.

In their previous system, the banker or retailer provided Diebold Nixdorf with secret codes to access the highly secure systems. These codes were then encoded, placed on a spreadsheet, and sent to a third-party call center, which required technicians to call in and retrieve the access codes. This manual process not only took time to complete, but it also cost the company well into six figures per year.

A colleague approached the business support team with the idea of creating an internal solution that handles creating and accessing the codes in one streamlined application. Having recently chosen OutSystems for a migration project from another low-code platform, the team decided to use it to build the app internally. “I knew the OutSystems platform had a quick learning curve,” says João Oliveira, Business Support Manager at Diebold Nixdorf. “So I decided to build it myself.”

"Our previous low-code solution wasn't meeting our needs, both from a functional and cost perspective. We needed a platform that was both scalable and reliable, so we explored several alternatives. OutSystems was the clear winner."

Solution

Building a game-changing app in two weeks

João knew that by using OutSystems, he could quickly accomplish his goal of creating an internal application that gives technicians access to sensitive codes when on-site. Before building the app, he had specific features and requirements that he knew would make it successful. First, the app needs to give admins the ability to upload and download code information, which was formerly created on spreadsheets. The app also needs to give technicians specific access to one job site at a time to ensure data security. Both of these required features were quickly and easily configured in OutSystems.

The Single Main Access application caters to the entire technician team, which requires a reliable app framework. “We have about 400 technicians using the app on a daily basis,” João says. “That means the app is accessed hundreds of times a day. And I know OutSystems can handle that kind of use.”

From start to finish, Single Main Access took two weeks to complete and has been used in three countries in Europe. Each country will have individual requirements, requiring the app to expand. “Creating custom configurations for each country is possible with OutSystems,” says João.

"This is a game-changer for our efficiency and a testament to how quickly OutSystems delivers real business value. In just weeks, we replaced a costly, outdated process with a digital, scalable solution."

Results

Transforming security access with a simple app

Though João says the application is a simple solution, the effects of this application are monumental. By creating this application, Diebold Nixdorf will save significantly by bringing the secure code operations in-house rather than outsourcing access.

Additionally, beyond cost savings, building the application with OutSystems has saved the engineering team time to focus on more complex projects. “The IT department has not had to deal with the back-and-forth communication required to fix bugs since there were so few,” says João.

With the migration project nearly complete, the team is excited to tackle their backlog of projects with OutSystems. One of the biggest benefits for Diebold Nixdorf is OutSystems’ unparalleled reliability. Lisa Kennedy, Senior IT Business Analyst, notes that whenever the team needs help, “I’m able to open a ticket and get someone to reach out almost immediately. ”

"With OutSystems, we can develop simple apps very quickly. They are easy to develop, and they simplify our lives completely. I’m extremely happy with my experience with OutSystems."
