Challenge
Altrad Sparrows is an energy services company headquartered in Aberdeen, Scotland, specializing in offshore and onshore engineering and maintenance services for the global energy industry.
Altrad Sparrows sought a low-code platform to enable its one developer to build tailored solutions that would allow the company to automate processes and improve the visibility of offshore issues. This digitalization should free employees to focus on more impactful activities while increasing offshore safety.

Solution
To test the power of OutSystems, Christopher Robin-Kennedy, the sole developer at Altrad Sparrows, started with a simple defect notification app that allows the business to log, manage, and address structural defects detected during operations. But as Chris grew more confident in the platform, so did the complexity of the apps he delivered.

Results
Adopting OutSystems has tremendously impacted Altrad Sparrows’ cost savings and efficiency.
In its first four years, Despatch tracked 66,000 consignments in the UK alone, saving the business about £600,000 in employee hours. The solution is currently available in the US as well. In the same way, the HSEQ portal has recorded an impressive 48,000+ observations, enabling Altrad Sparrows to reduce the hours spent preparing reports.

By increasing visibility and breaking down silos, solutions like Despatch and the HSEQ portal have also created an environment of trust between teams and boosted employees’ safety engagement. Chris explained: “The use of dashboards and trending of the live data has greatly improved the ability of all staff, particularly onshore management teams, to analyze safety data and act accordingly.”
As the only developer at Altrad Sparrows, the ability to reuse existing code and components, the Architecture Canvas framework, and the AI Mentor System have empowered Chris to keep up with the business requirements. “If I need to build an app related to safety data available in the HSEQ portal, I can expose a single module without referencing the entire portal. This has helped us improve productivity while keeping technical debt under control,” Chris described.
OutSystems has also impacted Chris’ career. He is now the IT Systems Manager responsible for all systems at Sparrows Group, and another developer has joined his team.
