How Roche executed a scalable and secure AI strategy

Roche, a world leader in biotechnology, is executing its "Galileo" program to prepare for the future of generative AI. To support this strategy, Roche needed a development platform that could meet its strict enterprise standards for security and governance while empowering rapid innovation.

Using OutSystems and partner Axians, Roche's development team created two transformative AI applications: RocheChat, a secure AI companion for 80,000 employees, and LUMIN, a modular AI assistant ecosystem for domain-specific problems. As a result, Roche democratized access to AI, accelerated workflows, and scaled productivity.

Challenge: Accelerating discovery

Roche's mission is to “Do now what patients need next.” The company launched its “Galileo” program to prepare for the future of generative AI. The proliferation of large language models (LLMs) in 2023 did not really address the specialized requirements of the life sciences industry. However, Roche saw this as an opportunity to build its own secure AI applications for its global workforce that would democratize access to AI while remaining compliant and scalable.

Solution: Building secure, tailored AI applications for a global enterprise

In 2019, Senior IT Consultant Christophe Newe was one of the first members of the Roche Platform Team, and he helped establish and scale OutSystems across Roche. The team focused on building the platform, introducing lean processes, and creating reusable components.

Therefore, it was only natural that Roche would choose OutSystems for rapidly building and iterating on two key applications:

  • RocheChat, a secure AI companion that helps with content creation, language translation, email communication, and summarization, was built in just three months.
  • LUMIN, a new, modular AI assistant ecosystem, connects to Roche-approved internal sources and uses logic-based reasoning to solve domain-specific problems for users.

Roche also integrated UI components and orchestrated backend AI services, tailoring the experience for users without compromising on performance or scalability.

Results: 80,000 employees increase productivity with generative AI

The two applications, RocheChat and LUMIN, have become foundational elements of Roche’s AI enablement strategy, dramatically increasing productivity and workflow velocity. RocheChat quickly scaled to 80,000 employees with over 12,000 daily active users, while LUMIN is already being used by more than 5,000 people.

By building these applications in-house, Roche is saving costs and fostering internal talent. The company has also trained approximately 8,000 employees on LLM basics, so they can build their own custom, configurable AI agents. This successful rollout has built organizational trust in AI and positioned Roche to continue its mission of delivering what patients need next.
